Jardin de Cadeaux
Saratoga Springs, NY
About
Nestled between two lakes in a small neighborhood, this property hosts an English style house with a stone front and lovely use of native stone walls through the property. I have been working over the last seven years to transform the design and layout to better fit the character of the house. Though still a work in progress, the basic structure is complete and includes several separate, but interconnected, areas that flow from one to the other. The property invites you into the entry garden through stone pillars topped with large pots overflowing the color into a bluestone courtyard that is home to a lovely Stewartia tree surrounded by cottage style plantings. As you step through the gate to the back gardens, a small informal seating area bordered by abundant pots of mixed annuals, and a lovely Japanese maple serves as the transition to the rest of the property. You can then wander the terraced perennial beds tucked behind low walls of native stone. These beds are anchored with several varieties of English roses and peonies and includes splashes of color throughout the season from a mix of perennials and annuals. Continue on to the top of the property through pillars of climbing roses to a secluded stone fire pit situated against a woodland border of native and non-native plantings. A stone path, tucked into the woodland edge, leads to a hidden garden in deep shade. A small stream ending in a waterfall carved into stone is the focus of surrounding naturalistic plantings of hemlocks, witch hazel, hellebores, Japanese primrose, ginger, ferns and many other shade lovers. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the serenity of the surrounding woods.
This garden’s estimated size is 1/2 acre.
