About

An inviting retreat, layered with succulents, cacti, grass and citrus, our family’s garden is the calming and richly textured central focus of our home. Always on view from the interior of our mid-century + Scandinavian design home through a long run of sliding glass doors, our goal has been to create an easy flow of light, air, and people, indoors and outdoors.

Inspired by arid landscapes, our garden is a declarative mix of greens, silvers and blues, soft and sharply sculptural silhouettes, with a backdrop of pine and the hills of China Camp State park lay beyond.

The three main zones of our backyard are defined by a curved pebble path and playful circular paving slabs: a close yet private raised cedar hot tub and deck area nestled in layers of succulents, Euphorbia tirucalli ‘Sticks on Fire,’ and icy blue Podocarpus; a main central area off the terrace, with grass ringed by tiers of citrus, olives, cascading acacia, aloe, and succulents; and a raised-bed kitchen and flower garden filled with zinnias, dahlias, nasturtium, lettuce, kale, tomatoes, herbs, and large citrus planters.

Our garden is an ongoing source of joy and learning, a feast for the eyes and belly. Ours is a lived-in and savored place of connection for family and friends, retreat, creativity, and ping pong.

This garden’s estimated size is 1/4 acre.
