About

This wetland prairie, begun on 2 acres in 2022, at the edge of a country club community, provides an unexpected opportunity to see a diverse ecosystem in its infancy.

There are areas of deep, rich soil characteristic of a tallgrass prairie; dry, shallow soil zones typical of a shortgrass prairie; and several basins that seasonally become wetlands.

A large array of wildlife is drawn to this recreated ecosystem, as magnificent to view as the 100-plus plus species of grasses and forbs planted from seed. The dominance of various species will change as the prairie ages, so seeing the difference each growing season is exciting.

The construction of this prairie wetland was a purposeful way for the owners to promote biodiversity and encourage conservation goals to its visitors of protecting remaining habitats and restoring degraded ones. A vital element in the success of creating such an ecosystem is a commitment to ongoing stewardship, from weeding out invasives to seasonal burning.

This garden’s estimated size is 2 acres.

This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: There is a path that leads through the prairie, which may not be suitable for those with limited mobility. However, there is an asphalt driveway that sits at the top of the prairie (the garden is located on a hill/incline), from which there is a lovely view of the entire prairie space.
